Alert21 Guide

What Is DLT in SMS?

DLT is intended to improve traceability and reduce unsolicited commercial communication. Instead of allowing any sender to submit arbitrary commercial content, the ecosystem links the business identity, sender/header and message template to the communication request.

Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) in India’s commercial messaging ecosystem is the registration and governance framework used by telecom participants to identify business senders, message headers, approved content templates, consent/preferences and the delivery chain for applicable commercial communications. Businesses sending regulated SMS traffic must use the registrations and processes applicable to their use case.

Why DLT Matters

Core DLT Components

ComponentWhat It Represents
Principal EntityThe business/organization responsible for the communication
PE IDIdentifier assigned to the registered Principal Entity
Header/Sender IDSender identity displayed or associated with the SMS
Content TemplateApproved message pattern with fixed text and approved variable positions
Template IDIdentifier assigned to the registered content template
Consent/PreferenceRecipient permissions/preferences where applicable
Telemarketer/Delivery ChainRegistered entities and providers involved in delivery

Typical DLT Messaging Flow

Business event → approved Alert21 template mapping → API request → DLT/route validation → telecom/provider chain → recipient → delivery receipt

What Alert21 Does

For an account with completed DLT configuration, Alert21 can map the template_id sent by the customer to the appropriate sender/header, Principal Entity information, approved content and provider route. This allows the customer’s application to remain simple while compliance-related mappings are centrally managed.

What the Customer Still Owns

Using Alert21 does not transfer the customer’s regulatory responsibility. The customer must maintain accurate registration, correct message category, lawful consent/preferences where required, valid content and lawful recipient data.

DLT FAQ

Is DLT the same as an SMS API?

No. DLT is part of India’s commercial messaging governance ecosystem. An SMS API is the technical interface used by software to request message delivery.

Can I send a different message using the same Template ID?

Only approved variable positions should change. Materially changing fixed text can cause mismatch/rejection and can violate the approved template relationship.

Does every country use India DLT?

No. Other countries have their own sender, registration, consent and messaging rules.

Direct Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about Alert21 SMS API, telecom compliance, and developer integration.

What is DLT in the context of Indian SMS regulations?

DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) is a blockchain platform mandated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) under TCCCPR 2018 to prevent commercial SMS spam. Businesses must register their entity, headers, and message templates before sending SMS.

How does Alert21 simplify DLT compliance for developers?

Alert21 abstracts the complexity of telecom compliance by validating your Principal Entity ID (PE ID) and approved Content Template ID at the API layer, catching mismatched variables before telecom rejection occurs.
